Year 5
Welcome to Year 5
Autumn Term 2025
Welcome all of you to what will be an exciting year in year 5. I am really proud of the way in which all of the children have started the year so far.
English
In our English lessons we will be looking at non-chronological reports and narrative. We will think carefully about the differences between them as well as understanding their wider purpose and audience. We will learn about both their structures and their language features, including description. We will be reading books about mythical beasts and monsters, understanding the difference between fact and fiction.
Maths
In Maths, we will begin the year with understanding place value and number, moving to using the four operations using various strategies and methods, applying concepts. We will start by focusing on strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, then moving to explore worded problems and how to approach these. We will get the opportunity to think about written methods and how to use these for all four of the mathematical operations.
Science
We will be exploring the exciting topic of materials, looking and understanding the processes of solids, liquids and gases. This will be an opportunity for us to understand just how materials impacts us as well as going in to depth about the physical changes that impact our everyday lives. We will be undertaking experiments and learning the effects of variables on experiments. Our final week we will explore the effects of changing solids to liquids and returning them to their original state.
Curriculum
We will explore a range of other curriculum areas.
In History, we will be studying 'The Tudors', in particular, Henry VIII. We will spend time thinking about how their lives were different to ours but also how their society has impacted the way in which our own society is run today.
In Geography, we will be studying The Alps and comparing this with where we live. First we will begin with looking at our world and how it is made up of different countries, lines of latitude, longitude, equator, continents and oceans.
In Art, we will be studying Installation Art and looking at how it is used and why?
In DT, we will understanding bridges, looking at various kinds and then using tools to make our own.
